Oppo K1 Review

In 2019, we'll see a new wave of flagship smartphones with even thinner display bezels, better cameras and some, without any ports or buttons. Among all this futuristic tech, we can also expect last year's flagship features and technology to trickle down to more mainstream phones.

One of the first instances of this new trend can be seen in the Oppo K1 ₹ 16,990. This is the debut offering in a brand-new series from Oppo, which offers an in-display fingerprint sensor at a very affordable price. In fact.

The Oppo K1 is currently the least expensive smartphone in the Indian market with an in-display fingerprint sensor, giving it bragging rights in a market where it's rather difficult to stand out from the competition.

But is that all Oppo has concentrated on, or is the K1 a good all-rounder too? Let's find out in our Oppo K1 full review.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Oppo K1 is powered by a Snapdragon 660 SoC and has 4GB of RAM
  • App and gaming performance is good and the display is bright and vivid
  • The Oppo K1 is available in just one configuration, priced at Rs. 16,990

Oppo K1 design and build

Oppo 1 was launched in China around October, so it is not brand new, and it shows in aesthetics and design. There is a strong similarity to many existing OPPO smartphones like Oppo A7 smartphones 13,779 (review) and Oppo F9 Pro, 3 18,399 (review). The plastic body is well put together and the phone has a nice texture, which we liked.

Oppo K1 back has a gradient design, which was very attractive in the reviewed unit's Astral Blue Color Scheme. This piano is also available in black trim. 3D injection-molded produces some calming effects when organized against backlight, and it does not pick any visible mark during our review period. However, it easily lifts fingerprints.

The place of the buttons is good and therefore their quality is quality. On the left side, there can be two nano-SIM cards in the tray and one microSD card (up to 256GB). Dual 4G VoLTE also supports. Below is a speaker grill, a micro-USB port, and a 3.5mm headphone socket.

Oppo K1 features 6.41-inch, there is a full-HD + display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for security, which is always welcome. Since this phone has a fingerprint sensor under the display, Oppo has to use the AMOLED panel.

Which is one of the few segments with this type of screen. Punch colors and dark black colors come with this kind of performance area, but you can tweak the color temperature with the settings app when you need it.

Oppo K1 is a water-drop knock at the top, so screen real estate is very available for use. The bezel is visible around the display but it is not very thick and there is no chin on the bottom. Due to the limited space around the selfie camera, there is no information LED. As always, a screen guard on the phone is already applied.

On the back side, we have a dual-camera module, which we see on similar other oppo phones such as F9 Pro. In the box, you will find a silicone case, sim ejection tool, a micro-USB cable, 10W power adapter, and a headset.

Oppo K1 specifications and features

In its quest to make it the most affordable phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor, it is good to see that Oppo has not done many compromises on the main specifications. This phone is powered by the reliable Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 Octa-Core SoC, which we have seen in the phone like Realme 2 Pro, 3 13,399 (review) and Xiaomi Mi A2 ₹ 13,885 (review).

In India, Oppo K1 only launches in a variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. You also get Dual-Band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, USB OTG, GPS and sensors such as Compass, Accelerometer, Ambient Light Sensor and Gyroscope. There is no FM radio.

Oppo K1 is still shifting ColorOS 5.2 based on the Android 8.1 Oreo. We feel that we will wait a bit for the start of ColorOS 6 with some new OPPO smartphones, possibly in MWC 2019. We searched for all the features of this version of ColorOS in our reviews of RealOS U1, 10,999 (review). And Realme 2 Pro, so we'll run through some remarkable people here.

There is an advanced look in the game space, and Oppo's Hyper Boost game optimization feature supports PUBG mobile in addition to other games such as the Aire of Valor, CrossFire, etc., to give it "boost" in loading time and game performance goes.

We tried it with PUBG, but it is really hard to tell whether there should be any concrete advantage because the performance of the network is always a huge variable.

You also get extra features like smart sidebar, which is a pop-out tray for app shortcuts; Smart Scan, which lets you translate some multilingual languages; And Oroaming, which when you are overseas, creates a virtual SIM card with an economical data pack.

In addition to system apps, pre-installed third-party apps other than Facebook are not very much. The default browser and OPPO app disable your notification shade with store alerts and ads.

You can disable the spam in the app store but the browser continues to spam you after disabling this feature. This is the same issue that we also faced with Oppo A7.

Oppo K1 performance, cameras, and battery life

We used the Oppo K1 as our primary device for a few days, and we did not have any major complaints when it came to normal use. When you hold it, the phone looks a bit bigger, so a handheld operation is not very easy. Despite the bright texture on the back and sides, it is not surprisingly very slippery.

AMOLED display produces bright, saturated colors and the smoothness of the sun is also very good. There is also good touch response in the display, which was apparent during typing. ColorOS runs smoothly without hiccups due to 4GB of RAM.

In-display fingerprint sensor works just as we have used on this other phone with this feature, and this means that it is not as fast as a standard capacitive sensor. Before successfully applying the Oppo K1, you need to keep your finger in full with the fingerprint icon. You can choose between three different fingerprint animations for the lock screen.

We found that the face is very fast and more convenient to recognize. Like with the previous Realme and Oppo tools, it's very fast and works in low light by rushing the brightness of the screen to brighten your face.

A 6.41-inch big display is great for watching videos. The color really pop and black levels are satisfactorily deep. While watching a YouTube video the speaker is quite loud, but for some apps like PUBG Mobile, it looks a little weak in the full volume too. The audio quality is the best, looks a bit slim and one-sided because there is only one speaker below.

Oppo K1 did not have any problem in handling heavy games. Asphalt 9: Legend Pres High was completely smooth with cranked graphics until preset, while PUBG Mobile gave a continuous framerate in 'Medium' graphics setting.

We were happy to know that even after gaining more than 30 minutes on a stretch, the phone does not get hot. If you know how to interfere with your content, then you have the option to mask the knot for different apps.

Benchmark numbers also indicate that the phone should be able to handle games and general apps properly. In AnTuTu, we got 1,28,852 points, while the GFXbench benchmark suit returned to the T-Rex graphics test at 41fps.

Coming to cameras, Oppo has used a standard 16-megapixel camera and a depth sensor on the rear, and a large, 25-megapixel sensor with an f / 2 aperture on the front, as if it is usually its selfie- F-Series uses in focus.

We start with Selfie Camera, which has an artificial intelligence (AI) beautifying system. You can also manually select the level of beautification. Enabling this made the texture of our skin somewhat smooth, at a point where it became clear that some type of filter was being used.

If you are in such a selfie, you would prefer AI beautification, and if not, you can turn it off. Image quality without beautification is good in daylight, because the look of skin looks very natural. You may have a background blur for selfie, but we found that the edge detection was not very accurate.

The selfie has made a good catch in low light, but issues of age detection of Bokeh mode are not much there. You get the HD Auto HDR for the front camera, which helps correct the exposure during shooting against the bright light.

The rear 16-megapixel sensor has an f / 1.7 aperture, which technically means that it should be able to capture good pictures in a dark environment because it allows more light in the sensor. Oppo K1 manages it but only to an extent.

In our tests, we saw that the noise was generally well controlled in the shadow and deep areas, but the texture was not very wide and in the distance, there was a lack of good definition in the distant objects. Macros performed a little better in low light.

Under good lighting, the main camera captured good details in the close-up. The edges were well defined and the colors were not exaggerated. The scenario was also packed in a bit of expansion, and HDR seemed to do a good job of balancing exposure.

The viewfinder has a 2x zoom button but it's just digital and is not optimal. Shutter lag is not a problem, but we saw that you can not use the shutter button at times in rapid succession to take many pictures because the camera is waiting for you one or two times before processing your photo and Ready to go again. This is a bit annoying because we are capable of taking many photos with most smartphones.

While shooting in Portrait mode the second 2-megapixel sensor is used only for identification of the edge. It does a great job with things and people with a few minor memories on time. However, in this mode, the camera takes a little time to focus, even if shooting in good light.

The Camera app also gives you standard shooting modes like Panorama, AR stickers and an Expert mode, which allows you to manually adjust the ISO, Focus and Shutter speed.

For video, Oppo K1 can shoot up to 4K resolution. Continuous autofocus did a great job in our tests. At 4K, the white balance was usually slightly off. Daylight footage looked very hot and the colors were overrated.

There is no stabilization in this resolution, which is a bit disappointing. At 1080p, the image quality is better with a more accurate white balance, and the footage is stable.

Oppo K1 has a battery of 3,600mAh, which lasted 12 hours and 36 minutes in our HD Video Loop Test. It's worth a real use for us, which usually includes music streaming, some calls, internet browsing, and some gaming.

The phone does not support the VOOC Fast Charging of Oppo, but you get a power adapter of 10W, which takes approximately two and a half hours to fully charge the smartphone.

Verdict

Keeping in mind that Oppo K1 is the only phone in which its price band has an in-display fingerprint sensor, whose launch price is about Rs. 16,990 is not very bad. We hope this will eventually stop and fall with comparable RAM and storage configurations with other Snapdragon 660 powered smartphones, such as Realm 2 Pro (review) or VivoV9 Pro, 15,379 (review).

We would like some things about OPPO K1. It could have a better build quality as well as USB type-c ports and perhaps fast charging. The low-light camera performance could have been better, and we really want to fix that annoying spam with some of its apps in Opera ColorOS.

On the bright side, you get innovation of solid app and gaming performance, a porous and sharp display, decent selfie camera, good battery life and, of course, the in-display fingerprint sensor - they all make 1 of OPPO good. Package which is worth considering.
