Samsung made it clear at the launch of the Galaxy M series that this new series is aimed at youth millennia, a market that has been captured by Chinese smartphone makers for some years.

To get rid of this audience, Samsung M Series phones have offensive prices compared to the older Samsung models, as well as notched display, dual or triple camera setup and bigger batteries.

While we already know how competitive the low-cost smartphone market can get, is the Samsung Galaxy M30 capable enough to take down the competition? We put it to the test to find out.

Samsung Galaxy M30 design

The Samsung Galaxy M30 is designed like the Galaxy M10 and the Galaxy M20. At the top there is a tear mark which refers to the Samsung Infinity-U display.

The phone has a large 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display, which is with narrow bezelles upwards and chin up and downwards. Samsung has extended the earpiece to the frame of the phone, and it's wide like the notch.

Samsung has opted for a plastic unibody for Galaxy M30, and has introduced it in two colors, Graduation Blue and Graduation Black. We had a Graduation Blue Edition for review which had a good blue shield on the body.

Samsung has made the edges of the phone curved, which is easy to hold in hand. The corners are also rounded so that they do not dig into your palms.

Power and volume buttons are placed on the right side of the Samsung Galaxy M30 and provide good click feedback. We found that the power button was deployed well, but a quick reshuffle was needed in order to reach the volume button. On the left side of the device there is a SIM tray with two nano-SIM slots and a dedicated MicroSD card slot.

At the top, the Samsung Galaxy M30 has only one microphone hole, while 3.5mm headphone jacks, USB type-c ports, and loudspeakers are placed below.

There is an oval shaped fingerprint scanner on the back side of the phone, which we thought was too high, there was discomfort in reaching. There is a triple camera setup on the back, which flushes with the body. The selfie flash is placed just below the camera module.

Samsung has succeeded in packing a 5000mAh bigger battery while keeping the weight down to 172g. You get a 15W charger in the box which should be able to top the phone relatively quickly.

The Galaxy M30 plays a large 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display with a full-HD + resolution (1080x2340 pixels). The panel is crisp, the viewing angles are good, and is also legible on the outside.

It has a small footprint in the top, with a selfie camera. Although it is small in size, it can disturb some people. You have the option of masking it by enabling the Hyde camera option in the display settings. It places a black strip on either side of the notch, but does not circle the corners, which looks strange.

The display settings on the Samsung Galaxy M30 can be twisted and you can choose between adaptive display, AMOLED cinema, AMOLED photo and basic. We had a display in Adaptive display mode at all times. This mode lets you tweak white balance and color levels.

Powering the phone is an Octa-core Samsung Xinos 7904 processor with two ARM Cortex-A73 Core at 1.8GHz and six Cortex A53 Core at 1.6GHz. The Galaxy M30 has two variants, one with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage and the other with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage. You have the option of expanding the storage to 512GB using the dedicated MicroSD card slot.

Connectivity options for the Galaxy M30 include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS. It has given accelerometer, proximity sensor, gyroscope and compass. The Galaxy M30 has two nano-SIM slots and both SIMs support VoLTE along with 4G.

The Galaxy M30 comes with Samsung Experience 9.5, which is running on top of Android 8.1 Oreo, which is a slightly dated version of Android. It was quite annoying because the phone would display four to six information in a day from sports and news to movie publicity. We did not opt for this and did not find the option to disable them. Ultimately, we had to disable the My Galaxy app to stop these notifications, which is far from ideal.

Microsoft Office Mobile, OneDrive, LinkedIn, and a bunch of Google apps are also preinstalled. While setting up the phone for the first time, it gave us a list of recommended apps to install, which we did not do. During setup it also sought permission to show us lock screen stories - news stories, sponsored content and lock screen.

It is easy to ignore it during setup and enable them by default, although at least you can deactivate them later if needed. When we reviewed the Samsung Galaxy M20, we found these problems, we did not enable lock screen stories.

Samsung has been baked in a few simple gestures. To drag the notification shade you can swipe on the fingerprint scanner and swipe to close it. You can double-tap to wake the display.

Samsung's chat over video feature gives you answers to some messaging apps like WhatsApp's notifications in the pop-up window while watching videos. Gesture navigation is also available but it simply replaces navigation buttons with swipe points.

Samsung Galaxy M30 performance, battery life, and cameras

The Samsung Galaxy M30 has a similar processor like the Galaxy M20 and we were expecting similar performance. With day-to-day activities, there is no sign of slow or stuttering the phone. We can easily multi-task with many apps in the background.

The fingerprint scanner is quick to unlock the smartphone, and also has a face recognition that uses a selfie camera to unlock the phone. Identifying the face is not the fastest, but it works in most light conditions.

Dolby Atomos is available but it can only be enabled when using headphones. We saw the loudspeakers a little soft on seeing the video and playing the game.

In order to test gaming performance, we played PUBG Mobile, which was played with the set of graphics set in the media preset by default and the frame rate set on the medium. We looked at these settings while playing games and changed the graphics setting to Smooth.

It ended the gap and the game was playable. After playing PUBG Mobile for 37 minutes, we saw that the phone was hot to touch and the battery level went down 9 percent.

We run several benchmarks to test the performance of the Galaxy M30. In AnTuTu it scored 1,07,495 runs. In Geekbench 4, it managed success in single-core and multi-core tests at 1,328 and 4,171. In comparison, Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro scored 2,389 and 6,593 in single-core and multi-core trials of 1,78,570 and Geekbench 4 in AnTuTu.

Benchmark scores from the Galaxy M30 were also slightly lower than the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 is 9,099 which is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC.

The Galaxy M30 manages 22fps at GFXBench T-Rex and 7fps in GFXBench Manhattan 3.1. This score is less than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro and its price is also similar. In terms of display benchmark, the Galaxy M30 is less than some popular smartphones in this price range.

This phone makes for your average performance by providing good battery life. With 5000mAh battery onboard, it can actually run for long without the need to be plugged in.

With our use, which used to use the Galaxy M30 for navigation for about 5 hours, watching some videos and using an active Whatsapp account, the phone could easily run for one and a half days.

In our HD Video Loop Test, Galaxy M30 gave 17 hours 4 minutes time. This is a great time and is much more than the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 but Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro is at the top of the Galaxy M30 at 19 hours and 23 minutes.

When you finally run out of electricity, then the fast charger supplied is helpful. It succeeded in charging the phone in 23 minutes and 46 percent in one hour. It took more than 2 hours for the phone to fully charge.

Photos taken with the Galaxy M30 were equivalent to things seen from some other smartphones in this price range. The shots we took in the day, they were fast and had good information. The phone was able to focus and set the right exposure. The objects were still visible at a distance.

Ultra-wide-angle sensor is useful for catching up to a wide variety of topics or groups of topics, but since it lacks autofocus, it is best used for landscape shots.

It started barrel distortion in some of the pictures taken by us, but Samsung offers a size correction option in the gallery to solve it. However, this sensor does not capture details as well as the primary sensor.

We shot some portraits using Live Focus mode and were happy with the output. You can set the required blur levels, and it is good to find the edge. You also get the option to change the level of the blur and add effects to the photos in the gallery.

The Galaxy M30's low-light camera display was average. The noise in the pictures was short but there was fine grain. It can be under the aggressive noise reduction algorithm. The objects at the distance were not very recognizable, but at this price it is acceptable.

The selfie taken with 16 megapixel front camera had good detail. We also used the Live Focus mode for the Bokeh effect, and despite it being the only front camera, Galaxy M30 detected a good edge.

The video for the primary camera is maximum at 1080p, but it lacks stabilization, which results in unstable results.

Verdict

Samsung's Galaxy M30 M series is the third smartphone in Samsung, and is priced at Rs. 14,990 for 4GB RAM variants and 17,990 for higher 6GB RAM variants.

This is one of the few smartphones at this price which sports a vivid super AMOLED panel, which we liked. We found the bigger battery too useful because we could stay away from the charger for a long time. The cameras are good in daylight but can give some turn for better low-light photography.

We were hoping for a new vanity with Android pie on the Galaxy M30 and were disappointed to find out the old Samsung Experience UI with Android Oreo.

To ask the price, the Galaxy M30 is not a bad option, but if you want better performance rather than features, then you can look at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro, which is Realme U1, 10,999 (reviewed seriously Offers good value)) and Asus Zenphon Max Pro M290 15,990 (review).
